Troubleshooting Tips

Java errors are usually caused by a program (such as a firewall or antivirus program) interfering with the Applet. However, other potential causes include corrupted or outdated components in your Web browser, Internet folders on your hard drive.

First, ensure Java Scripting is enabled in your Web Browser. In Internet Explorer, Start Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, and click Internet Options. Click Security and set the slider to the Default Level and click OK.

Next, if you have a firewall program running on your PC, you may need to configure it not to block Web scripting features.

Antivirus programs set to scan the Temporary Internet Files for Internet Explorer (or the equivalent in another browser) may also produce scripting errors. Try disabling this feature in your antivirus software.

If you do not have the most current versions, visit www.java.com/en/index.jsp and download the latest Java Virtual Machine for your Web browser. Updates to your Microsoft Operating System and Internet Explorer Browsers are available at www.windowsupdate.com.

Another potential cause for scripting errors can be (yes, this is correct) outdated video drivers. If you haven't updated the driver for your PC's video card in a while, now is a good time to do it. Visit your video card manufacturer's Web site to download the latest drivers, install the drivers, and reboot your computer.

Java a core-component of Mac OS X
Recognizing that Java has become the de-facto standard language for developing cross-platform applications, Apple has made Java a core-component of Mac OS X, which includes the full version Java 2, Standard Edition, version 1.4.2. Since Apple has optimized Java on Mac OS X, Java applications act as first-class citizens on Mac OS X.

Checking Security in your Mac System
Here are a few items to help with checking and improving the security of your system:

See the Mac OS X Technologies Safe and sound web page for an overview of Mac OS X security features, including a link to view and download the "Security Technology Brief" PDF document.

Be sure that you are running the latest version of system software. Apple will release security updates from time to time, and having the latest available system software version should improve the security of your system. Check the Apple Security Updates page for more information.

In addition to the Mac OS X built-in security features, the Macintosh Products Guide contains offerings from third-party providers that could help to increase the security of your system in particular situations.

Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server are certified under the internationally-approved Common Criteria security standard.
